Pinup Art - The ultimate Treasured Temptation for that special someone

Looking for that special gift for your boyfriend/husband that will always keep his mind thinking about you??  Why not a pinup photo or art work?

What is pinup art?

Pinup is defined as - "a large photograph, as of a sexually attractive person, suitable for pinning on a wall".

Style:

There's (3) basic dress styles in pinup:

Dresses with stockings exposed Swimsuit Full lingerie

History:

Pinups (sometimes referred to as 'cheesecake') originated around the 1930's. They could be found as a painted calendar, advertisement, or photo pinups of movie stars. G.I.'s (soldiers) adorned their footlockers with them and many ended up painted on the sides of airplanes.  Pinup was a truly unique American art form. The ‘pinup’ part comes from the fact that the pictures are meant to be put up where people can see them.

Although beautiful women had been portrayed in print for years, it wasn't until Esquire magazine began publishing George Petty's drawings, and then those of Alberta Vargas (Printed in Esquire as Varga),  that America's fascination with pinup really took off. Pinup art grew in popularity and sophistication through the 1950's.

The traditional hot rod pinup goes back to the early 50’s when Gil Elvgren took them out of the home and into the car. The majority of classic pinups either depict a finely dressed lady getting out (or rather struggling to get out) of a car, or trying to work on one. These glamorous depictions of sexy, fashionable women and their cars were all part of the girly art calendars that would hang in men’s locker rooms and garages. They're still popular to this day.

By 1960, the classic painted pinup was all but dead. Pinup art became lost in the growing sex industry. Paintings became more realistic and explicit while feeding a fascination for nudity, rather than creativity and beauty.

Today:

In the past few years there has been a rebirth of pinup art. It's becoming more common to find photos of 'pinup' girls in magazines that have been done with a 1950's feel.  It's not that difficult to find photographers that specialize in pinup photography, and artists who will do pinup drawings/paintings from photos that you submit.

Cartoons:

There are artists that will make cartoon pinups from your photos. They generally give you the artwork on a CD to use it as you wish. These can make neat graphics for custom vehicles, logos, and use on the internet.

Modern Pinup Photography:

Below are some samples of modern pinup photos. Although it would be great to spend the cash on a professional pinup photographer, you can have fun taking the photos with your boyfriend/husband.

(You could create your own setting by hanging a solid color sheet up for a background)

(Doesn't have to be a fancy studio)

Need a setting? Try using the car.......

Garages make great settings, especially if it's your boyfriend/husbands. Face it, that's where most pinups are hung up anyways.

How about a motorcycle?. Who says you have to be clean?

Last but not least, there's always the bed.
